Why learn different meditation processes,

instead of just one 'good' one?

Because some techniques work better for some people than others. There is no such thing as a universally perfect process!

Experts now recognise that we communicate with the world, as well as within ourselves, through different modalities.

  1. Some of us are predominantly visual. We need to ‘see something clearly’ in order to understand it. We actually will even say "I see what you mean" when we mean "I understand".
     
  2. Other people are more auditory; what they hear is of utmost importance to them. They also disclose this preference through their vocabulary: "It sounds good" is a typical auditory type response.
     
  3. And others are mostly kinesthetic. Their feelings and sensations become the main tool of communication, both with others and within themselves. Kinesthetic people learn best through touch. They need to handle or even dismantle an object in order to understand how it works. They speak more slowly and their language usually refers to feeling or touching rather than to thinking. "It feels great", or "do you get it?" are typical kinesthetic responses.

Most of us of course utilise all three modalities, but one is usually dominant. So, in meditation, since there are so many different ways to still the mind, it is useful to learn and practice a variety of techniques in order to find at least one that works really well.
