Seven years ago I decided to leave the security of a senior management
position and start my own business. I soon discovered that without the
structure and support of a large corporation, there was very little time
to spend ‘on the business’ because there was so much to do ‘in the business’,

Dear Marlyse and Michael,
Today marks an important milestone in Janet’s and my life both individually and as a couple, being the completion of a 10-week program in Well Being. I therefore felt it appropriate to take some time and write to you both, in order to acknowledge what you have done for both of us.
As you know, I came to you some ten weeks ago as a very skeptical person. I have been suffering from an acute migraine condition for about a year prior. During this time, I have undergone numerous consultations with a wide variety of medical practitioners as well as a whole series of tests including an MRI and several X-Rays to rule out the possibility of tumors, spinal injury or some other serious condition. Whilst I was obviously happy after each of my examinations to find out that I was physically healthy, it nonetheless exacerbated my frustration. No one could provide a reason for my daily occurrence of a migraine, nor could any prescription provide a solution, but rather only a temporary relief that often rendered me lethargic and unable to get on with life in a normal fashion. Not to mention the undesired negative effect my condition was having on Janet and my relationship as a couple.
Being a director of a computer software company, going on in this manner was simply not an option. I continued to persist with tests and in seeking alternate medical advice, but to no avail. For a number of months, Janet was repeatedly making suggestions that simply did not align with my mindset. Her proposition to seek an alternative means of relief through meditation did not appeal to me logically, since I am by nature a technical individual and the notion of being healed by some “voodoo magic” (as I perceived it at the time) did not appeal.
It was not until I was referred to a Neurologist that my mindset changed. Having undergone some trials on various migraine-controlling medication with limited success, my specialist suggested that it appeared the source of my condition was mostly my body’s reaction to ongoing stressed mental conditioning. To this end, he suggested that I consider what circumstances specifically contributed towards my elevated stress levels and how I lived my life in general. He then proceeded to recommend that I seek an alternative treatment through meditation. Being a scientific person I had to take note of that specialist’s recommendation, not only because nothing else seemed to help, but also because if a medical practitioner was recommending this tactic, then surely there had to be some merit in it.
Needless to say, the Neurologist was right. Within two weeks of commencing
the course, the severity of my migraines had subsided and the frequency
had lessened markedly, even though I had stopped taking my migraine-control
medication when I first began meditating. Over the past few weeks, I have
only experienced several headaches on occasion and have not had a severe
migraine at all. I have now been off all forms of migraine medication
for the past 10 weeks and with the exception of the occasional low strength
common headache tablet, have not had any other medication. Clearly, this
says something about the power of the mind and the effect meditation has
had on my life.
Through meditation, I have learned to control stress and channel my thoughts in a positive direction more often than not. It is quite obvious to me now (through my new found knowledge) that I have been self-destructing in the past. More recently, I have been able to control and prevent a migraine during its onset, before it becomes consuming. I now meditate almost daily, even if only for very short periods of time. Quite simply, I have made it a part of my regular routine and the effects are astounding. If someone had told me before I made a decision to meditate that within 10 weeks my day-to-day life would be different, I would have laughed it off.
As for Janet, while she originally joined the program together with me predominantly in support of my condition, she will readily admit (and has done so on numerous occasions during the course) that it has had a very positive impact on her too. She has learned to control her at-times erratic tendencies and manage her emotions in a far more positive manner. This has enabled her to relate to matters and individuals in different ways and often alleviate difficult situations. When asked, Janet is likely to say that the course has provided her with a mechanism to control some negative aspects of her life and consequently derive benefit both for herself and other with whom she interacts.
This in turn, has had a very positive impact on our relationship. We have learned how to be more supportive of each other and because we have been doing the course together, it has provided us with a new means of relating to each other’s issues. It is true that we have had a strong relationship to start off with, but it has nonetheless assisted us in developing our relationship in a direction we would not have considered beforehand.
Once again I would like to thank you both for the tremendous insight you have provided both Janet and I over the course of this short yet most effective program. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to feel better and get more out of their lives.
