Marlyse Carroll
Best selling author of
'Am I Going Mad? the Unsettling Phenomena
of Spiritual Evolution'
is available as a guest speaker
Here’s what Marlyse says about altered states of consciousness:
Have you ever wondered whether you were losing your mind? I don’t mean going mad in the medical sense. I mean briefly tapping into ‘other realities’, such as seeing things that no one else can see, or hearing messages that come out of nowhere, or feeling a presence that isn’t physically observable to others…
Well, believe it or not, such weird experiences happen to most of us, especially when we’re travelling the spiritual path. And whether we call them spiritual experiences, ‘trips’ or hallucinations, they’re important to our growth.
In the East and in transpersonal psychology, these phenomena are well recognised as a meaningful part of spiritual emergence. They allow us to tap into much deeper parts of our psyche – what psychiatrist Carl Jung called ‘the Collective Unconscious’. Or what shamans – the medicine men and women of so-called primitive societies – call ‘journeys to other worlds’.
These journeys, or spiritual experiences, are great gifts. They give us a much broader perspective on life – and on ourselves too. They can be extremely healing. And reassuring. And exciting. And helpful in relationships…
Yet, they can also be challenging, especially when we don’t understand their origin or their meaning. Or when they become so overwhelming that our ordinary mind doesn’t know what to believe any longer. At that stage, the ‘spiritual emergence’ becomes an ‘emergency’, a state of crisis!
I just love this subject and am happy to talk about it any time anywhere! Just give me a call.
